The PrtScn key alone often doesn't work in fullscreen or borderless games due to how exclusive fullscreen rendering works. Also, while Win + Shift + S uses the Snipping Tool overlay, it doesn't work well in games either, especially fullscreen ones. In fullscreen modes, games take exclusive control of the screen buffer, so tools like Snipping Tool or standard Print Screen don’t have access.
Best Alternatives for Taking Screenshots in Games
Use Xbox Game Bar (Built-in)
Just press Win + G while you’re in the game.
Then, click on the camera icon, or hit Win + Alt + PrtScn for an instant screenshot.
Your screenshots will be saved to:
C:\Users[YourName]\Videos\Captures
About Modifying Win + Shift + S in the Registry
Unfortunately, you can’t customize the Snipping Tool shortcut through the Registry or system settings since it’s hard-coded into Windows.
However, you can remap the PrtScn key to launch the Snipping Tool (just like Win + Shift + S):
To remap PrtScn to open the Snipping Tool:
Head over to Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard
Scroll down to “Print Screen shortcut”
Turn on “Use the Print Screen button to open screen snipping”
But keep in mind, this isn’t the best solution for games, especially when they’re in full-screen mode.
